2019 - Chairman Symposium Civil Engineering TU Delft
Singapore - City of the Future?
Singapore, a hodgepodge of the East with an infusion of the West, is a shiny example of economic and technical wonders. Within a single generation, it has grown from a “third world country” to an architectural marvel of world class standards. The food courts for the poor are still abundant, overlooked by rooftop bars hundreds of meters above. The ethical and social challenges faced by its inhabitants, are something of a dilemma to Westerners. The fact that there isn't something like a pension scheme, for example. Why would such a rich “country” choose to do this?
Perhaps there are some things that our Western brains will never quite understand. The fact remains that Singapore has an appeal for many. Not only for underprivileged fortune seekers, but also for rich expats from abroad.
In 2019 I - Vincent Doedee - had the privilege of being the daily chairman of the Civil Engineering Symposium hosted by Praktische Studie from the TU Delft. A day full of wonderful speeches, courses and debates that filled everyone with new knowledge and hopes for the future.
